"JUST BEEN GIVEN A 1997 25HP MERCURY OUTBOARD (0G488102). HAD PREVIOUSLY ONLY DONE 10 HRS WORK, JUST BEFORE CHRISTMAS, BIG STORM BOAT BROKE FREE & OVER TURNED, MOTOR SUBMERGED 2 DAYS, MECHANIC WAS SUPPOSE TO BE FLUSH, WENT ON HOLIDAYS & FORGOT, WHEN FIRST PULLED OUT OF WATER, PUT OIL DOWN & WOUND OVER AS SOON AS OUT OF WATER. THOUGHT TO BE SEIZED, JUST TODAY SPRAYED WITH CRC, LITTLE RESISTANCE, THEN FLY WHEEL WOUND OVER, GOOD SPARK OFF BOTH PLUGS & GOOD COMPRESSION. DO I NEED TO FLUSH BEFORE I ATTEMPT TO START? & HOW?. FRIED ELECTRICAL HARNESS (STARTER) ASSUME WHEN TURNED OVER WHILE STILL WET."

"Worked on motor all day & Motor is now going, will start & run for few seconds if none of the steering cabling is attached otherwise no spark due to wiring (interesting stopping it though!) (haven't run for longer, don't want to burn it out, no water etc) need to replace wiring harness (earth wire fried) There is sand everywhere though! Any ideas on best way to clean it? and whats the best way to flush the motor out?"

"David, If the motor was in sa

"David, If the motor was in salt water, you need to strip it down to its bearings and clean everything. Since it has been 3 months, I will guess it was in fresh water. If you have sand in the powerhead, and run the motor, it will damage the motor beyond repair. At least pull the heads and crankcase cover and hose it out, and re oil everything. Clean the carbs and set the floats. Now set it on the hose or in a test tank and run it for 45 min."

"it was in the mouth of creek

"it was in the mouth of creek that runs into open water (ocean)(affected by tides) so it was salt mixed with fresh, there appears to be very little rust, but as i said it was oiled within the hour of first pulling it out, so i guess that helped."
