Stumped 1975 75hp

I have a 1975, 75 hp Johnson. I am not getting juice to start the engine. I turn the key and nothing happens. I replaced the switch, solenoid and rectifier but nothing happens when I turn the key. It will not jump from the solenoid posts, yet the starter will engage when connecting jumper cables directly to a ground and starter. This will not start the engine but engage the starter. I am getting power at the switch and the fuse is not blown. Both positive and negative battery cables reflect continuity. Can anyone tell me what I should do, yeah I know, its old but its paid for and runs like a champ. I had removed the lower unit and replaced the clutch dog and had the powerhead completely off.

Thanks Guys

Re: Stumped

The start circuit and the ignition circuit are separate. Almost all start circuits have a neutral safety switch. If you have a problem in that circuit (where it is depends on your controls) It will nor crank. Try turning the ignition switch to the ON position and jumping the starter. Have water running on a flush or in the water as not to damage anything if it starts. Also look for any loose ground wires

Re: Stumped

I'm assuming the fuse you checked is the 20 amp fuse under the cowling. Try it again and jiggle the throttle back and forth while trying. It may not be engaging the neutral safety switch properly or it is bad.

Your solenoid should have two small leads on it. One goes to the key (indirectly) the other goes to ground. Jumper the ground one to a good ground, jumper the "key" one to a good 12 volts. Solenoid should click. If it does not, your new solenoid is bad. If it does click, and starter still does not turn, you have a bad ground from the battery to the engine, a bad 12v lead to the solenoid, or bad solenoid. (Based upon your observation that starter runs when cables are directly connected to starter)
