Stuck upper plug on lower unit

What is a safe way to loosen a stuck upper plug on lower unit, 1997 50 hp Evinrude, or can I get enough oil in with it in place

It must be removed to fill the gearcase. Get a hand impact the kind you hit with a hammer to loosen the screw.

That's called a screw driver impact. No marine mechanic should be without one.

Agreed. A hand impact driver is a must have tool. Steel fasteners in aluminum tends to get stuck and these drivers are perfect for knocking threads loose.

Whacking it with a hammer causes the bit to rotate.
