Stuck Shifter 1991 6 hp Johnson???

Bought a 1991 Johnson 6hp short shaft. I can't shift gears, it's as hard as a rock. I have not run it yet. Is it that it needs to be running in idle in order to shift? It shifted fine when the seller showed I to me in the tank. Here's a picture of a similar motor:

If the throttle is advanced too much, that jams the shift on many models... check the throttle setting.

I can't cut and paste into this forum page for some reason. I tried to post here but it would not upload pictures. I'm a slow typist, so I'll just place here a link to what I did to solve the problem. Moreover, I could not place the link below, it would only go above, and when I type it skips letters. That does not happen to me in ANY forum. Quite a hassle to post even this short posting, what a nightmare.
