I have a 5.7 merc with an alph

I have a 5.7 merc with an alpha gen 1 drive.It goes into gear ok but will not go back to neutral. If the engine is shut off it will go into neutral.Any ideas?

I don't quite understand h

I don't quite understand how an electrical switch will cause this to happen.The shifter is physicly stuck untill the engine is shut off then you can pull it back to neutral.

There is a switch back on the

There is a switch back on the transom connected to the shift lever mechanism. It's purpose is to momnetarily kill the motor when the shift lever reaches the N position. Just a quirk of the design - you can't shift from fwd to n unless the motor is momentarily shut off. Check that switch to see if it may have vibrated loose or out of position.
