Stuck in forward gear in lower unit?

Good day fellow forum members looking for a little help and things to look at. To start off last fall my motor, while warming up at the dock, kicked into reverse by itself nearly throwing me off the bow. Since then I could get one shift from neutral and whatever gear I put it in, it would get stuck in that gear. I have unhooked cables at motor and the control box operates smoothly. I have a new water pump to install and figured this would be the same area I might find the issue in the lower unit causing the issue? Thanks for taking the time to look at this. Motor is a 1982 35hp Johnson J35ELCND.

That model engine jumping into gear by itself would coincide with a poltergeist scenario!

Let us know what you find via your water pump installation process.

Ok so thanks for asking about how the LU oil looks. I totally forgot a sizable piece of information, so I've been getting water in the LU for 10+years, it usually has a slight Carmel look to it when I drain it at end of season. The last time the water pump was done by my pops 10+ years ago and he said the kit was missing the bottom seal that the pump sits on so we just reused the old one, bad idea I know, I just found this out recently. At the same time my pops did a prop shaft seal and prop shaft itself checked out good. The LU has had a small amount of water in it ever since and my old man wasnt too worried about it besides making sure it got drained out at end of every season, before it got cold. My grandfather left me the boat back in 1995, we brought it back from the Mississippi river and it was used 1-5times a year at our up north camp and now that I've moved out on my own I finally was able to go grab it and now have the boat with me where I live. I'm sort of picking up a project with some background info on it which I guess is more than some others have to work with. And yes when she popped into reverse it was interesting since I was standing on bow untieing rope from dock and almost went over into 45-50* water. Thanks for the quick replys and reminder. This forum is great and helped me a ton last year when I did the head gasket, exhaust cover gasket, ignition troubleshooting and carb rebuild, just an old boat I guess once I got it running tops last year this happened, probably 100% results from greatly overlooking the need for water pump replacement and chasing down water in LU. Thanks guys will keep this updated.

There is a detent ball and spring that may be partially injured from moisture. I think its parts 9 and 10 in your parts diagram.

Water getting in the lower unit for 10 or more years kind of explains it.---------Just start shopping for a used lower unit now !!!!

Right, could be a lost cause. You can always dismantle it and inspect. I rebuild these myself but as a tech here I am not allowed to troll for work. Try Tim's Outboard in Hackensack MN. 218 682 2331. They sell reconditioned ones or clean/inspected used parts to repair yours. I have no affiliation with them, other than as a friend and customer.

Finally have found time to go through the lower unit and here is what I found. Broken detent spring and clutch dog snapped. New parts and seal kit to put in then going to pressure test it and hopefully right as rain after that. Thanks again for the help and input.
