Stuck Engine

1987 Crusader 454 starboard side. I was out running around when the starboard engine shuts down. It started back up but the alarm would not shut off while running. Shut it down and go take a look. Oil everywhere in the hull... crap. For the life of me I could not tell where it came from. Did not see any real evidence of oil coming from the block or head and no splits in the hose from the cooler. The only thing I noticed is that dipstick was not completely seated and a spray pattern up against the floor covers. That is the only thing I can see. It must have vibrated loose? Is it possible that while running oil sprays from out from the dipstick?

Now the bigger issue. When it initially shut down it did restart but since the alarm stayed on I cut it off and then limped back to the marina on one engine. I called it a day and decided to deal with it in the morning. The next morning I try turning it over and the starter will not turn the engine over. It does move with each turn of the key but probably only an inch at a time if you were watching the flywheel. Every once in a while it will go several inches. I removed all the spark plugs and get the same thing. Turn the key and it moves an inch or so. I know this is not good but I am wondering if I am totally screwed?

What should I do next? Are there things I should try to see how bad it is? Maybe penetrating oil and manually rotating the engine to see if it loosens up? Would have to be with a strap wrench or some custom tool it looks like because there does not appear to be a nut or place to hook up a breaker bar. There is just a un-threaded hole on the fly wheel.

Anything else I can do? Or do I just accept that it is burned up and figure out how to pay for a remanufactured replacement? Guessing that is 5k+ to get done...

Ouch. Oil can come out of the dipstick if the crank case is being pressurized by combustion gases. If that is the case, then you must have a holed piston or some other major engine failure. How did the plugs look when you took them out?

I think you are going to have to tear it down until you uncover the source of the problem, but others may suggest some intermediate steps to try. Once you find the issue the decision to repair or replace will depend upon what is wrong and how many hours the engine has on it.
 
I think you are at the stage of pull the engine and see what you have. Any way you cut it it's going to be costly. Good luck.
