had a problem shifting into reverse last time i went out, found water in the oil and decided to tear down and replace seals in hopes that i would find problem with the clutch dog while there. problem is that i have done everything up to and including the pinion nut under the pinion gear but the drive shaft will not come out , seems to be still held in by the pinion gear.the locknut is pinched between clutch dog and drive shaft but if the shaft would come out it would drop with the pinion gear. this is a 1988 evinrude 200 hp e200stlccm

Unscrew the pinion nut only about halfway, wedge a screwdriver between the pinion nut and the clutch dog, then bump the propshaft upward with the heel of your hand or a rubber/leather hammer (easy now !) to separate the driveshaft from the pinion gear.
Once it pops free you can remove the nut the rest of the way and remove the driveshaft.

Reassemble with a NEW pinion nut.
