"Hi, Im a new guy on the block and for quite awhile followed advice dished out by members and in doing so got a gremlin sorted out in one of my outboards.
However, my sea fishing boat with a 1982 Johnson 140hp outboard fitted was stored for the last five years and recently tried to get it back working again now that I have more time for fishing.
As a precautionary fix I replaced the four spark plugs and she refused to start. When I drained the carbs, the fuel that came out was as dark as oil and that prompted me to remove and clean the carbs, blow out all the jets and holes etc. Starting her up she runs fine on fast idle but a bit off beat on idle. In gear she rev immediately like a banshee when given stick.
But, when launched the weekend, she started at the touch of the button, rev up nicely in neutral, but when put in gear, she dies as soon as the accelerator is moved forward after a slight pickup in revs. After starting her up again with the engine cover removed and a squirt of quickstart into the carb air cover when put in gear, she would stutter and then all hell break loose as she picks up revs and goes like clappers.
Funny thing though, as soon as I put the engine cover back, she refuses to start or run. Had to spent the weekend with an open engine...
Another thing, after she had run and switched off for a few hours, she is hard to start. The little fuel solenoid thing clicks when the key is pressed and in fact, as she stutters when the throttle is opened, the engine actually "kicked in" when the key is pressed a few times.
What can be wrong with the Johnston? It did run fine before going into storage. Any help or suggestions much appreciated.
