strut shim - forming in place...

I'm going to make a shim in place using some thickened epoxy. What can I put on the strut bolts so the epoxy doesn't stick? A little vaseline?

Im not so sure thickened epoxy would be strong enough. If it were me i would use epoxy and fibergass mat to make a mixture to stuff in between the strut and hull.

Kitty hair body filler would probably work well. I am partial to west epoxy since it is better for underwater. I have done your exact repair years ago on a 33 egg harbor. I lowered the strut, mixed up epoxy and shredded fiberglass mat and stuffed it in between the strut and hull. Then tightened the bolts to give the proper angle, then, after it set removed the bolts one at a time and used polysulfide caulk. I think i just used wax you buy at the grocery store for jams and jellies. Lol

"Gulf Wax" is about 3.50 a lb., will need to be softened and is readily available in supermarkets, BUT....That toilet seal idea Jeff said is about $1.50 for a big chunk of beeswax and you get 2 free brass screws in every box!

YES. I have used West epoxy with various thickening agents. I do have a small tub of chopped glass that should be added for strength. Note, however, that chopped glass is not a thickening agent, you will also need to add Cabosil or one of the higher priced West silica products. West resin and just chopped glass will still be runny, and it would be a big mess on a overhead surface.
