Stripped spark plug threads

Today, just before heading to the river, I replaced the plugs on my 1959 35 horse johnson. The top cylinder's plug threads stripped out when I tightened the plug. I didn't tighten it much at all and they stripped. What is the easiest way to fix this problem? New power head? Or helicoil?

Heli coils will loosen off sometimes when you pull the plugs. You're better off with a new cylinder head.

Great deal!! I'm not 100% sure, but I think the torque should be about 19 ft/lbs. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I put the new head on and the motor doesn't want to run right. It will start and run for a minute then just die. I think it has something to do with the gasket in between the head and the part that bolt on to the rear of it, the one with all the screws. What is this cover for? It seems like it allows something from the combustion chamber into the covers. Could I be getting water into the combustion chamber from this component? I'm at a loss as of now.

I didn't replace the gasket on the very back of the motor. Can anyone explain the covers on the back and the small passage that goes through them into the combustion chamber?

There are two valves for the compression release system on those old motors. when you pull on the rope start it opens the two valves slightly to make it easier to pull start I believe the air goes into the water jacket in the head it has been a long time since I had my 35hp apart. As long as the valves seat good you should have good compression. The gaskets for the covers on the outside of the head can just be permatexed on they just circulate the water in the head as long as they dont leak water.

Ditto, the same thing I had on my old 1962 40hp Evinrude.

What do you mean by permatexed? and is there a rebuild kit for this engine where i could just tear it ll down and rebuild it? I'm kinda tired of fooling with this or that, i just want the motor to run when its supposed to. seems like I'm having nothing but problems...
