stringer shift cable

Hi, I traded for a 78 24 foot Sea Ray with a omc 240 hp. motor about a year ago. After a lot of repairs, I finally put it in the lake last week and found a few more problems. I just rebuilt the upper unit and noticed that the shift cable housing was leaking. Pulled it up and now I need to know how to put it back. Worked 2 hours and no luck getting it to shift right and no luck finding information. I have the lower unit off and cable out and free. Can some give me some help please, thanks Mike.

I read through the post, my story sound about the same. Went to lake with the grandchildren that had been helping me over the last year. Had fun for a few hours until the upper unit went out. I had checked the oil but evidently didn't get enough in it. I had bought a used upper and lower assembly from a guy who was parting out his boat. I had to put new water pump assembly and shaft in it. Changed the lower unit lube and checked the upper for water and thought I topped it off. But when I tore it down, it had melted the gears down and had almost no gear lube in it. Took the old parts from the original unit a rebuilt it. We have a trip planed for this weekend at Wilson lake about 150 miles one way from my home in western Kansas. Last week was a test run, now if I could just figure out this shifting cable problem. I did find some information but it just the opposite of mine. The last time I did this, guess I got lucky, it worked fine. The info I got told me to take the long cable and pull it so the short cable is as short as it could be about 4 7/8 inch. When I do that my cable is closer to 6 inches. Must have the wrong info. If I'm going to take the boat, I need to figure this out today. Thanks for any help, Mike

Thanks, I had looked at both of these and the instruction from crowley marine is the one I was referring to that appears to be backwards from mine. In the video, I can't tell how he has the cables when he is putting the housing back into the rack and pinion. I think that is what I need to know. Thanks again, Mike

I have a hydro shift that is backwards of the full mechanical. Guess I'm not going to take it to the lake this weekend. That should save me some money, so I can buy a manual. I have really got spoiled finding information on the web. I have spent thousands of dollars on repair manuals in past. Now I find it easier just to search a form and find someone who has had the same problem and how they solved it. Much better than manual, thanks Mike.
