" Hi,

I allways spin the prop after taking the boat out of the water; it seemed to be a little "gummy", and checked for fishing line, no such thing. Decided it was a good idea to change/check the gear lube and when draining it, all I got out was a few ounces of water, and lots of dust, not chunks, just graphite looking dust... there was quite a bit of this black crap stuck to the magnet on the drain plug, things were obviously burning up in there.

I drained it out real well and flushed it with lube, allowing it to sit and then drained out the crud that falls to the bottom, a few times. When I filled it, I plugged the vent hole with my finger and pressurized the lower unit, there was definitly some pressure, but I could hear air escaping from a seal in the top of the lower unit. After working the prop back and forth a few times everything seems to have freed up. Nothing seemed to be coming out of the seal around the propshaft or bearing carrier... I'm wondering how all the lube was ejected, mabye half it was ejected and the rest burned off?... This lower unit never leaked before and had new lube in the spring. Anyway, I'm wondering how bad it's going to be to replace this seal?, and if it sounds like other parts may be damaged. I can usually find a good lower unit for about $300, and am trying to decide if I should do that or just fix what I've got. Also, what other years and engines have this same lower unit, will any L6 lower unit work? and how about the V6's and L4's ? Thanks in advance,

Jon "

" mercury i know nothing about

" mercury i know nothing about, but i just did my chrysler for the same thing.the upper bearing went bad because of lack of lube, but after taking it apart it had been bad a while before i got it.it is probably the driveshaft seal above this upper bearing. now mine was not that bad to change but parts were $140.00 for the upper bearing, seal and water pump, but the lower bearing was o.k.,yours sounds like you may need all of it.good luck.Jim King "
