Strange humming noise

I have a 1982 johnson 50hp motor that runs pretty well. However, usually on a cold start, the motor will turn over, and instead of take off running, it will start to hum until I turn the key back to off. It may do this several times before the motor starts. Anyone with a similar experience?

I've had it with both the cowl on and off. I'll take a look at the bendix shaft, but it's a rebuilt starter (armature, commutator, and brushes) along with the bendix gear assembly, I thought I properly oiled it, but maybe not.

You don't have an electric fuel pump do you? Can't think of any other device that would make a humming noise. Maybe one of the gurus can come up with something. Good luck

I installed an inline electric fuel pump. However, I use it to fill the carbs and supply pressure, then turn it off. And the humming has always been present, even with my old manual fuel pump
