I have a 1993 4hp Evinrude Del

I have a 1993 4hp Evinrude Deluxe with the stop button on the handle. Pushing the red stop button does nothing but if I remove the emergency stop lanyard it'll stop the engine.Does the stop button & the emergency stop lanyard use the same "ground" or would the trouble be in the stop button (switch assembly) itself? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you. Bill

"I can't imagine that they would be on the same ground. Because the lanyard is suppose to stop the engine in an emergency, like if you fell out of the boat. The stop button is probably broken, i would just try and replace the button. Even if they were on the same ground they would probably both not work. Hope that helps."

Lee--Thanks very much for the comeback. It looks as tho the stop button is part of an enclosed unit.Am going to try & get it open to see if I can just replace the button itself. The whole module is a bit expensive---I just may have to live with stopping the motor with the emergency switch. I do appreciate your input Lee. Bill F.

Depending on how many terminal

Depending on how many terminals there are you may just be able to get a stainless steel toggle switch.(just a regular switch on and off) It would be a little cheaper i can imagine. Something along those lines. And your welcome.

i would be careful about not u

i would be careful about not using a marine switch of some kind.

i put a regular switch on my stern for tilt/trim to make it easier to put on my transom saver by myself.........well long story short i told a guy on here to do it and jwb said it was a bad idea because they get wet somehow..........and it lasted for a while even a couple of rains then one day no tilt. it was the switch blowing fuses...........and yes i had on a ruber booty.

jwb was correct not a good idea.

"they can also get wet,even w/the boot,.and activate trim,....till batt runs down,potentially damaging unit,.................(don't ask me,how i know this...)"

"If you are haing trouble findind a marine swithch, try a regular one,get some liquid electrical tape and coat the backside if the switch, and use the rubber bootie. Not a perfect fix but I have one on for 5 years now and it's working great. Also I turn off the batt switch when not using so no danger of short's when sitting."
