"Well..... I'm almost at m

"Well..... I'm almost at my wit ends on this engine! When in nueturaul it idles and revs up fine! But once I put it in gear it will only go to about 1/4 throttle and just die. I've replaced condensor and points, have set point gap many times to be sure correct, overhauled the carburetor, timed the engine and synchro'd the throttle and magneto, compression checks out OK and replaced fuel filter. I have a fuel pump kit on order and thats my next step, if that dont cure it I just dont know where to go from there?
When docked and in nuteraul eveything seems to be working fine but once I head out onto lake and start throttleing it up it has no power and motor dies usually starting right back up. Would a charging system have anything to do with these symptoms? I consider myself a pretty good mechanic but i'm just lost on this, gotten 3 manuals now and understand this engine pretty well. Is there anything in the shifting part that would cause this. All help greatly appreciated!!!! Many Thanks! Carl"

"If you have done everything t

"If you have done everything that you say correct there is one thing left. I,m not saying this is the problem but these old engines get a carbon blockage under the powerhead in the exhaust port.

The banana in the tail pipe thing.
The exhaust can't get out and backs up killing the engine.
This happens if the engine is used for trolling or idles a lot and never really gets run wide open long enough to burn the crap out.
Oil rich fuel doesn't help either.

Just a thought and worth a look.
All you need to do is lift the power head off and take a look & all you'll need is a new base gasket and maybe an O-ring for the drive shaft."

"Check the linkage between car

"Check the linkage between carb and ignition, we were having the same motor and sometime, when removing the large fibreglass cab, the linkage near the carb was rotating 180 degree, motor stil start, but when trying to throtle up the engine was bogging down.
Take a look at that linkage"

"Carl,
I too am having troub

"Carl,
I too am having trouble with my 1967 Sportfour 60HP. I have done everything you describe and more. If you search my posts by author- you'll see.
In fact, at my wits end, ... I removed my powerhead yesterday- actually HOPING that there was something there.... Alas... everything looked normal. Clean and no blockages. Like you, I'm back to square one.
There's nothing in the lower unit that will cause "our" problems (BTDT).
I'm going to reinstall the powerhead tommorrow, hook everything back up, and head to the lake wednesday...
Since I have already been deep inside this engine, There is one item I found that I haven't tested yet after replacing. When I removed the intake to get to the reeds (leaf-valves)... I found a very damaged leaf base gasket (pn#307131 - if you have the parts book)

Leaf Plate Base Gasket"">
Hopefully, replacing that will cure my problem... and perhaps yours also. I will post here if I find anything.

"Ray.... Do please let me know

"Ray.... Do please let me know what you find out and if it helps, in meantime i'm replacing my fuel pump and testing some other things i'll keep you posted.
Many Thanks!

"Carl and Charli,
I needed t

"Carl and Charli,
I needed to dig into the exaust anyway for my own peace-of-mind. I actually enjoy doing this stuff- as all I ever work on is old cars...
That intake gasket was really fun to make! (Dealer didn't have any and I'm impatient. They had the Powerhead gasket though) But I have some real nice gasket material, hole punches, and I sharpened a painter's putty knife razor-sharp. It worked real well for the square openings.
I have already reassembled the engine.. and ran it in a garbage can of water for about 20 minutes, doing some tweeking and testing.
It starts instantly (actually faster than instantly- I can't release the key that fast). and I can idle it down to 700 rpm. However, there is a HUGE stumble just off-idle (vacuum leak still?). I've been tweeking the idle-mixture screws using an engine analyzer meant for a 4-stroke 4, 6, 8-cylinder cars (it reads 2x rpm because of the dual-points- but it does let me know max rpms)
I have another "problem" I'm working on.
If I (manually) open the throttle (using the throttle cam-roller) very slowly (from idle to about 1/8 throttle)... the engine spitters and sputters but doesn't die. As I very slowly increase from there, it smooths out at 1/4 throttle. If I "goose it" from idle.. it sneezes (major) one time- then revs as normal. I'm heading to the lake in the morning for testing/tuning in gear. I should repost around 2:00 pm est.

"I took the '67 Evinrude 6

"I took the '67 Evinrude 60HP Sportfour out this morning about 10:00. She started instantly- and idles smooth. I adjusted the idle mixture screws as we idled away from the dock in the no-wake zone. Max rpm's was achieved around 1 1/8 turns out on the left screw, and 1 turn on the right.
First, I brought the rpm's up slowly fully expecting the stumble I'd experienced testing in the garbage can. It didn't stumble- but the power was less than stellar. At ~1/4 throttle- she began to make power- and pushing to 3/4 throttle- brought the boat up on plane pretty quickly (18 mph). I pushed the throttle full ahead- but the boat still failed to accelerate, gaining only 2mph from 3/4 to full throttle. In fact, I could ease the throttle back to 7/8 and she sounded better, and speed increased about 1/2MPH.
Max speed for the 16.5' 1550 lb (boat w/motor+ about 500 lbs people/gear/gas) Deep-V was 20.8 mph ... this is about the best I have been able to get in the last 2 seasons. I have hit 24.7 mph testing in the boat alone last year.
After cruising a bit, I slowed and stopped, and tried a few "ski-starts". There's a full second bog then a low-toned "BaaaWaaaa"... and she would pull fairly well. I don't think enough to get a 200lb skier up on a slolum... but much better response than I have had lately.
Even at full throttle, the engine does not seem to be working very hard, or be at max rpm's. I really need a 2-cycle 4 cylinder tachometer to see if it is indeed at 4000-4500rpm or not. It just doesn't "sound" like it.
I will probably take her out again tommorrow evening- and change plugs to the Autolite 303's because It has J4C's now. I only wish I had a few props to swap and test.
