Stiff Forward Controls

"Hi all, just need a few tips

"Hi all, just need a few tips please. Forward controls are quite stiff both fwd and rev, but moves quite freely when the button is depressed that stops controls from engaging into gear. Sorry I should also mention it is a 2001 4.3 V6 mercruiser with alpha leg. Any info will be much appreciated thank you. I guess i just want to know why it is so stiff to move when it is engaged in gear.

Although I have limited experience w/cable problems, I would agree with your diagnosis since the shifter functions in neutral. What makes a 6 yr. old cable fail when my 20 yr. old cables still function freely? Is it that the cables are being constructed with cheap foreign manufacturing and/or materials? Thanks, Guy"
 
"Check that the shift cable do

"Check that the shift cable does not have a tight turn or a kink in it. The minimum radius for any turn is supposed to be 12".
You may need to disassemble your throttle quadrant and grease the shifter cam and lever mechanism. They get kind of dry after a few years, but your rig does not sound old enough to have this problem.

Generally speaking, Cables are a Non-Servicable part,+ they're just Replaced,......
And,.....
The degree of difficulty is directly related to the original installation by the boat manufacturer.....
In other words,..... It's hard to say....."

I was reading an article the other day about lubricating cables. Apparently Motorcycle shops have a kit, that works well, in sealing the lubricant end and forcing the lube to length of the cable.
Never seen or tried one though.

"thanks for the help guys, I think it would probably just be easier to replace the cable. as penny pinching as I am who wants to risk a good day on the water just for the sake of a cable?? Not I, so once again cheers for the advice fellas"
