It may be time for a new throttle cable as well.

Unhook the cable from the carb, Set your engine idle to specifications, Ensure the engine is running correctly by revving the engine up a little bit a few times and see if the idle returns to normal idle speed with the throttle cable disconnected from the carb, Then hook up cable and see if you get the same results.

Now be aware there's kind of an art to adjusting both the throttle and shift cables, Because if any of the two shift cables are slightly out of adjustment then there is a chance that it could play a roll with getting the throttle cable to work correctly due to incorrect preload on the cables and shift controller mechanism.

Now with any luck, Hopefully kghost will come across this thread and offer you his explanation of how to adjust the throttle cable, Because I can honestly say that kghost is definitely one of the best guys at explaining things clearly on this forum, And kghost is definitely an expert when it comes to adjusting cables, That is for sure.

In the mean time have a look at kghost explanation on adjusting the shift cables for a starting point just to be sure your ok at that end.
