I have the head off my 1964 18hp Evinrude,I'm working on it outside.
When I took the head off originally and pulled the starter cord, the engine turned over very easily(as expected)
There was a short rain shower, which caused me to take cover.
I had left the engine cover off unfortunately.
I carried on with cleaning up the gasket faces and de-coking the head and replaed the engine cover.
When I attempted to pull the engine over a couple of days later,it had jammed.
I managed to free it off by using a screwdriver in the teeth of the starter gear.
I gave it a few pulls, and it seemed back like it was at first.
When I pull the start cord a day later,I have to give it a bit of a snatch because it has stuck.
Is it possible water has got on the mains and big ends and has rusted slightly?
I replaced the impeller a few months ago.
Any advice would be gratefully received "V"

If one of the pistons was at the bottom of the stroke, the intake ports were open---a direct path for water to enter the crankcase and cause destructive rusting of the bearings. Especially if the motor was tilted up a bit. So I guess the answer to your question is yes, it is possible.

Thanks guys,I don't feel capable of removing the engine,(I'm a bit long in the tooth).Although stripping it on the bench I could handle once it was removed.
Any suggestions on lubing it somehow?
The fuel pump is off at the moment,do you think when I put the head back on,connect the pump, and fire it up,the 2 stroke oil will lube the bearings?
