Sterndrive 228 problem

Boat is a !979 27ft Carver Monterey - Mercruiser 228 S/N 5431395 - 228 Sterndrive - no s/n - pre-alpha - 1978-1982

Situation - changing lower shift cable - the brass bolt/ftg - at the end of cable - the one you need the special nut for

It would not come out - special tool rounded the corners - heat and penetrating oil did not work - nor did Extractors. - or praying

I have grinded the head flush with the housing - intended to drill a pilot hole 33/62 - and then use a 9/16 - 18 tapered tap - fine thread

Problem is i dont know what is on the other side - how far should I drill the pilot hole

Asking anyone if they have had this problem before - appreciate your comments

STOP before you destroy it
The thread is 1/4 x 18 NPST,meaning its a straight tap, not a tapered pipe tap
but if you do destroy it I have made a solution to repair it

I make these to repair the threads in the housing. Developed it for my personal boat and its been 4 years and no problems

Thanks Bt Doctor - Mine basically looks the same except i have grinded out most of the brass - the hole is a little bigger than 7/16 - i will get a more accurate hole size - I will also get the 1/4 x 18 NPST
I grinded it out thinking there would be a bigger hole for the Extractor

the size is the size of the drill to drill it out for 1/4 inch pipe
7/16ths is what you use

I got the 1/4" tap - unfortunately I did not buy a longer one. I can just barley start to thread. it does feel like it will thread but I wont know until I get a longer tap or some kind of extension - the hole is not a perfect circle

I am very interested in your solution to repair this problem

a correctly drilled hole is indeed "round"

i`ve shipped there before with motorcycle parts,shouldn't be a problem if shipping costs are low

I have found a 12 inch long tap so I will see how that works out

Success - managed to tap and create good threads - went to the local hardware store got a brass fitting and it screwed right - = not sure how hard to tighten it
I managed to fit the short [ipe tap into a 10mm long socket - worked great
Now the next step - the shift cable but that is for a new post
