Stern leg not locking down

smidge

I have a 1980s alpha one stern leg that will not lock in to the down position, The release lock is out , the leg goes up and down but will not lock in the down position and will come out of the water when reverse is selected.

The release lock is out ,

Ayuh,.... So fix the reverse lock, on the return line of the trim pump,....

Or up-grade the trim pump to the newer pump, with the built in reverse lock,...

Ahhh so That is the locking mechanism that is on the throttle cable. I thought it was operated by the screw in handle on the bottom left of the pump. I will start there tomorrow, Cheers Graeme

Well its not in the shift cable locking mechanism, That is working perfectly, I am back to the screw in and out release mechanism on the bottom left of the pump...???? it is bypassing somehow ??

post a pic of the trim unit so we can see what it is. the reverse lock is a mechanical valve operated by the SHIFT cable
to lock the drive down in reverse. some pumps had a release valve on the pump. ,manually operated to pull the drive up by hand or to lower the drive incase of pump failure

Starting to think it is in the Rams, as they have a bypass valve, in case of hitting something in the water.
The pump checked out ok , raises and lowers the leg. But you can grab the leg and lift it up with the locking mechanism on the gear lever .....on lock.
