I pulled my stern drive to rep

I pulled my stern drive to replace the o rings and check the spline out. i see in the manual that you need to have an alignment tool to re- install the drive. is there anyway to re install the drive w/o the tool? or do i risk messing everything up?

If not you may be OK, but it is advised to check the alignment any time you have the drive leg off. You can likely borrow an alignment tool from any marine shop, if you have done work there and got a friend or two.
Be aware that operation with poor alignment puts a high side load on the gimbal bearing, coupler, and the U joints, and will result in premature failure.

Rod is correct about using the alignment tool. If the engine female coupler splines are not square but slightly rounded on the edges, that is an indication of improper alignment and/or failure to lubricate the shaft.

Before you adjust engine mounts, check the mount bases to make sure that they are solid and not rotting away internally which will throw off the alignment and cause the damage Rod has advised. I had to replace my coupler and rebuild the engine mount bases due to rot which caused misalignment of the OD and engine. Expensive repair around $800-$1000 for P&L since the engine must be pulled.
