Stern Drive Repair

Hello everyone, I am back with another question. I am still very new to this forum process so bare with me. I am replacing my water pump, shift cable and bellows on my 1984 Mercruiser MR. My Q is, do I need a gasket between the two halves of the upper and lower units. When I disassembled it I scraped several small amounts of something resembling gasket material but not enough to really tell me that I need a gasket there. Maybe water entering this part of the stern drive does not matter? Well I would like to include a picture buy either the forum process or my computer is being stubborn and will not allow me to do it. Thanks everyone, the-menace Dennis

no gasket between the halves, but there is one very important "quad seal", like an oring but square, where the lube crosses through from upper to lower

Thanks for the reply. I do not have a square hole that requires a O-ring but I do have a round hole with an O-ring that is about 3/8" diameter and the hole is about a 1/4". Would that round hole be the lube hole you are referring to?

Yes it is,

the O-ring is round but a side (cut) view of the o-ring would show it to be square in profile.

That is what he meant..........bad description......
