Stendrive Zinc/Impeller removal

Bluefin

New member
Gday People,

I am new to your forum.

Hello to all & thankyou for accepting me.

I have recently purchased a 21ft/6.5 meter Savage Bluefin powered by a 470 Mercruiser with an Alpha sterndrive.

I am wanting to change the impeller in the sterndrive.

All intructions/manuals I have viewed state I must remove the zinc to expose a bolt in the lower leg, stating the zinc can be removed by Allen key.
Please keep in mind the zinc fitted to my unit is the fin type NOT the flat type zinc.
My problem is I can not remove the zinc.

Refering to manuals/instructions they show the zinc can be removed by undoing the Allen key headed bolt.
Here is my difference/where problems begin....

My zinc is held on by a Flat head screw type bolt.
When I attempt to undo the screw I have no success.
I can rotate the screw approx 1/2 inch both clockwise & anticlockwise. In doing so the zinc also rotates with the screw.
It is not overly tight & can be moved quiet freely,in fact I can grab hold of the zinc & also rotate it freely by hand.
When rotated the 1/2 inch or so I can hear & feel it "Lock" as if onto some sort of stopper.
I have even had the thought the flat screw head I am attempting to undo is infact part of the zinc in a stud form.
I can see no lock nut if this is the case.
Any advice/info will be greatly appreciated.
As a last resort ..
Will I expose the "hidden" bolt in the lower leg if I "smash" off (Ouch) the zinc to buy a replacement.
Cheers

Had that same problem on an old boat I bought years ago. The bolt is indeed a bolt, going thru the lower housing into the zinc. It should unscrew and the zinc drop off. On that old one, the bolt holding the zinc had a rounded socket on it and was siezed to the zinc. Had to "surgically" remove the zinc with a drill, grinder and small pry bar to expose the lower end mounting bolt. Once I dropped the lower off the upper half, then was able to remove the zinc bolt and re-do everything correctly. Just be careful to not booger up the drive when cutting out the zinc.

Hello

Thankyou for your reply.

I was thinking what you suggested I have to do was correct,I just wanted to hear there was no äftermarket" zinc with a stud attached different to original.

Ayuh,... It's Zinc, it melts at a very low temp...
Melt it away with a mapp gas torch...
