"I have a 1987 75hp 2stroke mariner outboard. I have a rotary steering system that wont turn. I disconnected the nut on the cable that connects to the motor and it moves freely but it is very dry. Does this mean that I need a new cable? I tried to move the motor manually but it wouldn't move at all. What should be my next step? Is it possible that I need a new helm? Also, do I need to raise the motor to get the cable out?"

If the motor won't turn at

If the motor won't turn at all with the steering cable disconnected then the problem is with the motor. Look for some grease fitting on the motor where it turns. Hopefully you can force some grease in them and free it up.

I didn't completely discon

I didn't completely disconnect it. Its not completely taken out just enough for the wheel to turn with ease. You can see the rod go in and out. Is it still the motor?

For this test you do not have

For this test you do not have to take the cable clear out. Just disconnect it from the motor. The motor should turn back and forth easily if there is no problem.

ok the motor moves easily but

ok the motor moves easily but when I connected it again it wont move. Is it the helm or cable? I am gonna get the whole steering kit you think that will do the trick?

"Brae,
Before you go out and purchase you must determine the problem. The steering rod passes through the tilt tube and is secured with a large nut. At the end of the steering rod on the other side of the tilt tube is the steering link which connects the rod to the motor. If you disconnect the link and the motor turns freely the motor is OK. If you leave the link disconnected and tighten the large nut securing the cable to the tilt tube and the steering wheel will not turn than the steering rod is seized in the tilt tube. Remove the large nut and pull back the cable if possible and apply penetrating oil at both ends of the tilt tube and allow time to penetrate. Take a soft mallet and strike the end of the steering rod towards the tilt tube. If you can get it started working back and forth you may be in luck. If not good luck."
