"I took a 1996 Forc 90 off a boat and have trouble with getting the steering cable out. Is the cable rod and sleeve both suppose to come out? It goes thru the motor hinge and I was not sure if I could/should pull the rod and sleeve both out. No manual... would like to purchase 1
Thanks,
Jeff"

"Jeff, I think the "sleeve

"Jeff, I think the "sleeve" you are refering to is in fact the "tilt tube" on the motor.

The end (assembly) of the steering usually screws on to one end of the tilt tube and then the cable rod extends through to the other side.

If you undo the steering so it is clear of the threaded end of the tilt tube, you can use a mallet (or similar) to try and tap the rod through (or until it breaks free) and then just pull it out of the tube..."

there is a nut on each end of

there is a nut on each end of a tube that has this stainless steel tube that has the steering rod thru it. Can I take both the steering rod and this stainless tube out? I wasn't sure if the motor hinged on the stainless tube or another tube outside of it.

"From what you are describing,

"From what you are describing, that stainless steel tube is the motor tilt tube - if you take that off, your motor will fall from the bracket.

So no, only the rod..."

I have it half way out...so I

I have it half way out...so I guess I need to tap it back in.. The steering rod doesn't want to come out. I used a large screw driver to tap it out and both the sleeve and steering rod started coming out. Is there a better way to do this?

"Jeff, sounds like it is reall

"Jeff, sounds like it is really seized in there. I have usually just give it a good crack with a mallet if it was froze and then pulled. You may have to try a bit of heat on it to free it up..."

"I could actually turn the mot

"I could actually turn the motor with the steering wheel, but it was not easy. I have not taken the large nuts (2) off each side of where the steering rod enters the motor hinge. Am I ok to tap this rod out along with the stainless steel sleeve that is around it? or do I need to tap the sleeve back into the hinge part of the motor? Thanks for your help"
