steering issue

I cant turn my steering wheel to the left and when I turn it to the right I can turn the wheel but nothing is happening. Motor starts right up

Guess is cable steering and the cable end popped out of the helm (probably due to trying to force a frozen cable) but without knowing what engine (make, model) or what kind of steering (cable, hydraulic, electronic) you might have just as well asked us to guess what color sox you have on.

Hi so sorry-we are new to boating and was looking for some advice. The engine is a 150 Yamaha outboard that suddenly stopped turning no forcing and I hardly ever wear sox. Thanks for your reply I will try to be more informative in the future

Year? Fresh or salt water? Type of steering? Is the motor currently centered or turned to a side? If you disconnect the steering link does the motor turn freely?

2007-we are on a river with gulf access-the steering wheel is turned to the side and I believe its cable. I will check the steering link tomorrow and get back to you-than you!

I would probably be looking at the cable being popped out of the helm behind the dash due to trying to turn a cable that has the end seized in the tilt tube. Hopefully it is something simpler than that but won't know where to lead you until you can verify that the engine turns if disconnected from the cable.
