Steering fork installation on AQ271A

I am trying to determine the orientation of the seal ring (part# 839195) that goes on the shaft of the steering fork to end up between the transom sheild and the fork. There is a flared tapered side and a thick flat side. Which side goes against the steering fork?
Do the fork splines bottom out into the steering arm or is there a gap to measure between the fork and housing?.

The seal that you are speaking of is the "V" ring seal. The thin lip faces UP against the transom shield.
I use an adhesive to join this to the fork shaft.
Be sure to grease the upper thin lip portion.

The collar steering fork and spindle arm must be indexed correctly.... The Port/Stbd lock-to-lock steering stops are part of the spindle arm.
I don't recall without looking this up, but the 271A fork and spindle arm may be indexed for only one position (earlier ones are not).

.

The steering fork is not indexed.
Thanks for the help
OK.... Then you must pay particular attetion to this when raising the fork up into the spindle arm and shield.
Just double check your full "lock-to-lock" drive angle (the angle of "fork" articulation, since the transmission will be removed)!
Even being OFF by one spline is noticeable!

I'm sure you'll do just fine.:)
