"I have an 87 model 80hp mariner and the steering is tight.Steering cable is good. I have been told the bearings need to be replaced, does any one have any information on how to do this as I have also been told that the power head has to be dismantled to get to the bearings."

"Bruce, what they are calling

"Bruce, what they are calling a "bearing" is what most would refer to as a "bushing".

There are two bushings and a bunch of seals - one at the top and one at the bottom of the (whatever you call it) - pivot or swivel.

The bushings themself are just a kinda plastic or nylon, they are grease packed and then the seals are supposed to keep all the lube in. Works great for a few years then often the lube leaks out and the bushings crack - whether due to fatigue or keeping a motor stored outside through changing weather...

Anyhow, it is more than a royal pain to change out the bushings and seals. You have to remove the entire swivel bracket assembly from the motor, then disassemble the bracket assembly itself to get at them.

If you are fortunate enough to have the gear to hoist the motor and suspend it you can remove the bracket without tearing the motor all down. If not, and an 80 is a bit too big and heavy to try otherwise, then you do need to pull the powerhead to get the rest of the pieces to a size/weight that you can manage.

Often times if the motor is old enough that the bushings are causing a problem, then the tilt tube is practically welded on and other components are seized as well.

Don't try this without a manual a propane torch and a big wrench and be prepared to replace alot more parts than 20 bucks worth of bushings - you will most probably break other pieces of hardware in the process."
