Stearndrive level alarm

I took my boat out for the first time this season. Five minutes into the water I proceeded full speed. Shortly after, I heard the beeps for an alarm, that later I found out was for "Stearndrive level too low". I had never heard that alarm before. I just beeped like for 10-5 seconds, and then I didn't hear it again (I returned to shore at slow speed). Later I checked and I see the lube is right at the "Add" line in the monitor. So my rookie questions are: 1) Is the alarm that sensitive, or is it likely to be something serious (e.g., water, problem in gears, etc.)? If it is the former, I don't know what type of oil it already has, so can I add just any high-grade gear lube, or should I just change all of the oil? Thanks in advance.

If you dont know then I think its due for service and a oil change
Not knowing your sterndrive I cant say what type of oil to use
