Stator tests wo Mercotronic

Hi - newbie to boats here. I

Hi - newbie to boats here. I have a 1985 Force 85hp with no spark at the plugs. Before I take off the flywheel I would like to see if the stator/trigger system is working. The shop manual says I MUST have a Merc-o-tronic to check for any ignition problems. Can I do any tests that will show whether the ignition system is or isn't working without a Merc-o-tronic? I do have a multi-meter.

We do not use that anymore. A

We do not use that anymore. A peak reading (DVA) meter is what we use now. The Merc-o-tronic was optimized for the points & condenser(battery) ign.

what does a voltage regulater

what does a voltage regulater do and what is the little silver thing at the bottom of the wire panel has a couple of wires going to it i believe its about 1inch by 1/2inch and its on my 75hp chrysler model number 757ha
