Stator Replaced - now difficulties getting running 1982 140hp

Motor: J140TLCN, 1982 Johnson 140hp

I have another post (1982 Johnson 140hp Spark Problem) describing my problems up to this point. I decided to start another thread.

I have replaced the stator, am now getting good strong spark on all 4 cylinders and thought I had this thing licked. We went for a test on the water this past weekend and the motor will not run properly.

It's a bit difficult to get started. When I do get started I have to idle it up fairly high (about 2000-3000 rpms) to get it to keep running. Then when I try to put it in gear it dies almost immediately.

I'm thinking that the timing is out of adjustment because of the stator being changed. Am I off base here or is there something else to be considered?

I'm vigorously searching the forum and my service manual for suggestions and proper method to ensure timing is correct but thought I would also ask for help.

Thanks in advance,
Trey Monson

Re: Stator Replaced - now difficulties getting running

Thanks for the reply...I did just get the boat/motor back in February. I used it a good dozen times before it lost spark on 2 cylinders on Memorial Day weekend. It had run perfectly up until then.

After much troubleshooting, ohm testing, power pack and coil moving around, etc I narrowed the problem down to a faulty stator. I removed flywheel and replaced stator. I'm now getting good spark on all 4 cylinders again but the motor will not run as described earlier.

I know the flywheel key is not sheared.

So it sounds like you're saying that timing is most likely not my problem.

Description: it's a bit difficult to start, doesn't idle, have to rev it up a bit to keep it running in neutral and it's still sluggish even when revved up, it does sound like it has a solid miss when running at lower rpms, and when I put it in gear it dies instantly.

I wasn't aggressive with trying to get it to run. In fact, I did not even take it off the trailer because when it started acting this way I didnt want to get stranded.

I'd really like to get some thoughts because if it's not a timing issue then I'm not certain what I've got.

many thanks,

Re: Stator Replaced - now difficulties getting running

I talked to a marine mechanic (guy I bought the boat from) and he suggested that I probably have 2 wires flip-flopped. there are two wires that come out of the power back - one each going to the two coils. the wire with a blue stripe goes to the top coil and of course the other goes to the bottom coil. I just looked and sure enough - the wires on the right bank are flip-flopped. This evening I'm going to switch the wires and hook up the muffs and see if she runs any better. Will keep you informed...

Re: Stator Replaced - now difficulties getting running

such a simple thing but everyone makes those mistakes
hopefully she runs good now let us know :)

Re: Stator Replaced - now difficulties getting running

i connected the muffs - she cranks nicely and seems to idle very well...we're going to make a quick trip to the lake this evening to put 'er through the paces and make sure we're back to "normal." Will hopefully have final confirmation later this evening...

Rule for the pack to coil wires on OMC >> Blue to the sky , Green to Grass or ground ...:)

Re: Stator Replaced - now difficulties getting running

you're exactly correct...that's what the mechanic said when i talked to him and that proved to be my last problem...just got back from the lake and she's purrin like a kitten...look out summer here we come...
