here's a pic of the stator on my1985 gt 150. does that black stuff mean the stator has problems.

runs rough when cold then smooths out when it warms up. the tach don't work. got new rectifier was installing it when I saw this. I was thinking about replacing the stator while I had it apart. it appears to be the original parts.
The battery Is 5 years old and won't hold a charge. The charging system was putting out 13 volts.
 
Then you might as well replace the stator now as it could also have something to do with your tach problems. Make sure you have the battery load tested or else replace it.

Got a new stator on order and a water pump repair kit. What gasket sealer should I use for the rectifier and water pump. Torque for the flywheel nut?
 
Those black coils charge the ignition power pack, not the battery. The copper ones charge the battery. But the black, leaky ones are due to fail, so you are wise to replace it.
