Starts and then dies.

35HP

New member
Starting 35 HP up for first time in 5 years. It will start and run for a few seconds then die. How likely is it that I need to overhaul the carb?

Thanks

Thanks for the reply Jeff! Its a little puzzling that it would start at all? How can I account for that?

Thanks,
Alan

How are you getting it to start? are you spraying carb cleaner in it? if so that's why it starts. Most likely you will need to clean the carb and the gas tank out. Carbs aren't that hard to clean

All you need is spark, compression and a little gas to get it going. To KEEP it going is another matter.

Thanks for the comments! To answer the above questions I did use new gas and fuel cell. I did not use any starter fluid. All I did to get it to start momentarily was pump the tank ball, choke it and it started up. Since my post I did remove the carb and thoroughly cleaned it reinstalled and it started right up and continued to run. I then did lake test and it preformed pretty well. After about 45 minutes at various throttle positions it started running rough and lost power so I had to limp back to dock. I think at minimum I need a carb kit and then go from there! Thank You for you comments!
