Starting problems

"I have a 1976 OMC sterndrive,

"I have a 1976 OMC sterndrive, i believe the engine is a 165. Its a 6 Cyl engine. When i attempt to start the engine i hear one single loud click. I was thinking starter or solenoid switch, replaced the solenoid switch same problem. when i jump the starter the engine will attempt to crank very slowly. You can hear a low click coming from the distributor cap. any suggestions on what is wrong?"
 
"Pull the spark plugs and and

"Pull the spark plugs and and try turning it over then keep a eye on the holes see water coming out the holes. Oh check the oil it overly full.

If it still doesnt turn over faster then start cleaning all the connections start at the battery leave em off and follow the wires to the next connection.

Then pull the dist, cap and sand the points, and the cap connections.

Then pull the master plug and look inside what do you see.

Ok put it all back together try it again.

Finally still no go pull the starter and bring it to auto zone they will check it for you.

I am assuming you have a fully charged battery.

"I pulled the distributor cap and looked inside, everything is clean, i have just replaced the spark plugs. The master plug on the distributor cap looks clean. No water was visible when i pulled the plugs and attempted to start. I have started cleaning all the connections from the battery to the starter. I found a couple of wires did not have good connections. I have fixed that problem. Still working on cleaning connections the last one left is the main ground wires."

"Good if it doesn't turn faster then, if it was my boat i would pull the starter bring it to auto zone they will test it for nothing. If the starter is good then it's time to pull the drive.

See the drive could be stopping the motor from turning.

You do have the drive fully down you never ever start this drive unless fully down. And water going to the drive."
