"son bought a mid 70`s mercury 500. previous owner claims only 20 min on complete rebuild. we can get th motor started by manuelly choking it and it will idle ok in a higher idle postion but when you shut idle down it dies, even when motor has been running for 15 min, you still have to choke it tio start it again. the choke selenoid is gone so you have to oull the top cover off to choke it. any help"

"the carbs are dirty, its running lean, remove and clean carbs, someone probably left old gas in them and the jets are clogged

ps, no fuel means no oil"

"i dont want to sound like an idiot, but do have to take the carbs completely apart to clean them"

"if you don't then more crud will find its way to the jets, remember that no fuel or lack there of will destroy a motor quickly. Your motor is basically 2 engines with 1 carb each, sharing the same crankshaft. By the time you figure out 1 carb is bad you ran 2 cylinders with no oil, certain death of all 2 cycles. I took a guess at your serial number, if this looks like your carb then definatly clean the jet behind the brass plug (7/16) at the bottom of each carb

"starting problems, i was on here last week and dicussed my starting problems with old merc 500 outboard, i am having the carbs completely rebuilt now, someone also said to me that it is possible that the stator might be bad under flywheel, does this make any sense?"

"you described a classic fuel

"you described a classic fuel problem. if you wish to check the stator, even with the carbs off, disconect the fuel line and drain the fuel. hook up a timing light to each plug wire and check for spark by cranking the engine and looking at the flash of the timing light. This will tell you only that each cyl is recieving a spark. normally if the stator is bad you have no spark, I don't think that is what you are describing."

"I cant wait until this is don

"I cant wait until this is done, when i get the carberators back i will put them on and try it this all over and see what happens."

"I suggest putting a waterpump

"I suggest putting a waterpump in it before doing anything. It's also a good idea to put a compression test on it, this way you can see if it's worth fixing. 20 minutes on an overhaul, right, got a bridge to sell ya too."

where is the pump located on t

where is the pump located on this thing and are they available and can i put one in or do i need a degree from notre dame.

Your motor does not have an ov

Your motor does not have an overheat shutdown / warning system there for you must maintain the waterpump impeller. It is on top of the gearcase.Just a few nuts and bolts.
