"Hope some one can help.......

"Hope some one can help.......I have a 1989 Evinrude 150 xp that is giving me fits. The problem is when I first try to start it cold I only get spark from a couple of cylinders. As I crank on it, or after I wait awhile,it will start right up and run fine the rest of he day. Sometimes it may be 10 minutes, sometines 30 minutes before it will fire up. I have replaced the power pack, ignition swithch, kill switch, and it has a new battery. I get 200 volts from the charge coils with the plugs in a 270 with the plugs out. Is it possible for the stator or timer base to work sporadically for the first start up of each day? Any advice would be much appreciated."

"Large black coils at the rear

"Large black coils at the rear portion of the stator..........

The stator under the flywheel can be checked visually for a meltdown. Look closely at it. If there is any cracks combined with a sticky substance dripping down on the timer base and powerhead area, that would result in a AC voltage drop to the powerpack. Should this condition exist, replace the stator. Check the resistance of the stator with an ohm meter between the Brown wire and the Brown/Yellow wire. Check for whatever the proper readings should be in your service manual. If you have no manual, your local library may have one."

"Joe, thanks for the advice.

"Joe, thanks for the advice. I checked the resistance again and it did not pass the 985 +/- 25. It came in at 930."
