i have 1984 15hp evinrude.... sometimes it starts 1st go other times it will just not start... and when it does it runs rough for a few seconds then dies.... when it is running it runs great with no problems just getting it started can be a real pain. have replaced spark plugs, and it seems to be getting fuel does anyone have any suggestions, the problem is so intermitant it is really enoying... it has been starting and running perfect for the last few days then suddenly today it has happened twice, but was used multiple times between both occurances.. please help... thanks

i have also found a issue today with the rope start.... bolt coms lose and the starter gear doesnt mesh properly, if u tighten to much the rope won't recoil, but then after a fewe pulls the bolt has lossened to much for starter to mesh properly..... thanks for any help in advance

start by ckecking your spark on the plugs,It should be a blue looking fire.If it is orange or yellow then then check coils. You say it runs fo a few seconds then dies,if your spark is good then it may be flooding.clean carb or carbs. As far as the bolt go,I have no idea.Keep posting this is a good site.Good luck.

Was the starter apart / removed ?----------There is a washer ( item 11 ) that must be in place!!--------------There is a tab under the spring cup that must be in a hole in the mounting bracket.

hi thanks for that, have decided to do a full fuel system overhaul, i live on the water and the motor gets quite alot of use, but also sits on the boat exposed. also just realised it has probally never been done this motor b4, so well overdue...

racerone the proplem 1st ocurred b4 starter pulled off, and realised it has been lose for a long time.. (cup and spring guide assembly has been moving, didn't realise this wasn't meant to be until yesterday when i got stuck in the middle of a lake with the starter not grabbing). I have not fully pulled apart (dont want to have to rewing spring), but have pulled it apart enough to replace the cord, it wasn't broken but thought since i had it off i might as well put new cord on the safe side. There is a washer on the top, but just noticed in the shop manual there is another washer, does this sit above or below the cup and spring assembly. as for tab it wasn't in a hole but didn't see one, but it did seem to be in the right position for the starter interlock
thanks

thanks for that racerone, have just removed starter again and found that washer sitting in the side of the spring housing, i can see how that will work now, allowing the bolt to be tightened, and the starter to still move free. hopefully now i can get back to problem free boating. never had a issue b4 exept to replace water impeller which is to be expected due to high use of motor. but after a week of problem free boating the last couple have days everything seems to have gone wrong. so a good service a few new parts and back to enjoying the water
thanks for your help

ok so i have fixed the starter, rebuilt the fuel pump with all new parts, and pulled off and cleaned the carb, replacing some parts.... now the motor will start when cold, took me awhile to get the idle screw right, have read 3 different things on how many turns back it should be, so it took a bit but think i mut have it right since it will now start and keep running.... but once it has warmed up a bit if u stop it, it wont start again till it cools down, it has good spark, bulb is hard, so any suggestions?????
thanks in advance
