Starting problem with 2005 Stingray with 5.0 L Mercruiser

I get a "clicking" sound when turning the key to start the motor, and the engine will not turn over. I have a good battery and the blower motor is going strong. I have checked for loose connections in the ignition wiring around the engine. Is this likely to be a defective starter motor?

Most likely the slave solenoid is not working. You will find this on top of the engine. It will have a large red wire a large yellow/red wire a small yellow/red wire. If you have someone turn the key to start you can find it by the clicking noise it will make.

Welcome aboard !

Your sure the battery is fully charged ? If yes then jump the starter.

Won't crank. Tap the starter with a hammer. Still won't crank ? Remove the spark plugs.

Crank it then. Won't crank then it's time to ether yank the starter and take it to auto zone and let them check it for free or yank the drive and try cranking it again.

Above is what i would do. It's free advice but it is what i do when a problem like yours jumps up.

You did check the cables to make sure you have a good connection at the battery.

Have a battery switch that could be bad or bad connections.

Or a bad ground at the block.

Or you can try jumping the starter solenoid. cleaning the connection on that.

There is a lot of free things you can do before spending a penny.

SOMEONE BEEN DRINKING TODAY............JUST SAYIN..............

DO NOT SMACK YOUR STARTER WITH A HAMMER!!!!! You cannot do this with the new style starters as they have permanent magnets and smacking them with a hammer could break them loose or even break the magnet. Dropping this starter will damage it. Check the slave solenoid first. Here is a link to the solenoid and a picture of what it looks like.

IF you jump the two large posts on top and the starter engages then this is your problem.

Likely the slave solenoid on top of the engine as Dockside said (cross your fingers). Try jumping at the solenoid as suggested. If it still won't turn, have someone start it at the helm while you take a voltage reading at the battery. If there is minimal voltage drop, the starter isn't trying to engage. Check the starter solenoid (on starter) by jumping it. If there is a noticeable voltage drop, could be a bad connection somewhere or have a listen to hear if the starter is actually trying to turn. If you hear a hum, pull the plugs as suggested by Chiefalen. Have someone at the helm crank it over while you watch the sides of the engine. If it cranks and nothing comes out the spark plug holes, you have a starter, battery or wiring issue. If it cranks and water comes out of the spark plug holes, you've ingested water, and that's why the starter won't turn. Either an exhaust manifold leak or missing exhaust shutters.

Hello I was hoping you might be able to help me. Normally when I turn the key I can hear the fuel pump engage. However recently I can't hear it engage and the engine will not start. It will crank just fine however it will never catch. Sounds like it's not getting any fuel. Any thoughts?

you grabbed onto a 2.25 yr old post...start a new one for multiple responses. Fuel pump relay may be dead.
