"I have Mercury XR4 with a starting problem I have been working on for a month now. While cranking the engine, the engine will try to light off but not fully, causing the bendix on the starter to drop down. After a few try's, it finally starts but almost floods the motor in the process. I have a new 1000 CCA battery, I over-sized ALL battery cables and connectors, replaced the starter and the starter solenoid, made sure the enrichner was working, rebuilt the carbs and cleaned them and still have the same problem. WHY will this starter not stay engaged until the motor fully starts? If the motor hiccups or pops once, the bendix drops. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Keith"
