Was starting my 1987 chaparral 185. It has a 165 mcm inboard. It was turning over ok then I heard a pop and then all u hear is the starter spinning. Doesn't sound like the engine is turning? Any ideas maybe the starter went out?
if you hear the starter spin but the motor isnt there is I think only 2 things the starter is not kicking out to engage the fly wheel or there is a broken tooth on the flywheel you could try to turn the engine a little bit by turning the crank pully a bit then try starting to see if it engages. if it does your flywheel might have a broken tooth. or just pull the starter and bench test it. if the bendex is not kicking (I think its called the bendex or however you spell it lol ) depending on the starter you might be able to pull it apart and clean it. what motor do you have? there is a solinoid on the starter its the smaller cylinder looking thing that when electricity is applied it pushes the bendex out to engage the flywheel on the motor. if that solinoid is week it will not kick out enough and just spin the starter gear. I have rebuilt a few starters its a pain In my opinion it would probably be easier to just buy a new one. you might be able to find a cheep starter at oriellys auto parts they have a marine catalog for mercruiser.
