Starting motor

Just because I have no experiences in doing so I will ask here. When attempting to start a motor out of water what precautions should be taken? Im aware that water should be ran using the earmuffs(?), does the lower unit need to be lowered from the trailered position or anything else?

drive should be in the down position to protect the U joints
water MUST always be used when running any motor.
simply cranking for testing is ok without water.
Drive can aslo be removed and a water supply put to the water inlet hole(mercs,cobras)
