Trying to start my johnson 60hp outboard, its been in storage for about 5 years. Engine will turn over with plugs out but when plugs are in its as if battery doesnt have enough ompf to get the job done. Its like its stuck in molasis. Kinka like valves are stuck closed. Thanks in advance, bob

What does lower unit oil look like ????----------Model # of motor ????--------------------Inspect starter for worn out brushes. Try another battery as well.

Sorry, johnson 60 hp model #j60elcnm. Lower unit oil is full dark in color. I'm begining to think its the starter. I had jumper cables from car to engine and the negative side was very hot after trying to start it several times. The starter motor didnt feel hot though. Debating wether to perform a tear down on the starter. I appreciate your response racerone. Bob

Those starters are easy to inspect / repair -----I replace brushes all the time ( $5.00 )-------------Check ohms from commutator to shaft and that should read infinity.---Piece of sheet metal with a 3/8" wide slot keeps brushes in place while you lower armature and stator in place.
