what would cause the motor to be hard to start after it sits for 5 min (after running it for 10 min at WOT) if it sits for only 1 minute it fires right up.

1986 28 SPL

thanks

the question is whether its a fire problem or fuel problem......hook up and inductive timing light to it and run it and get failure and see if its firing....and get back to us...

i forgot to ask that racer.....good point...i also forgot to ask if the motor is turning normal after the run....the motor may be trying to run hot.....

The primer bulb is nothing but a manual fuel pump.------------All it does is put pressure on the fuel system and fill the carburetor.--------------The electric primer needs that pressure to work properly.-----------What is your starting procedure after it sits for 5 minutes ???

all i do is bump the key with out choking it. it takes about 5 bumps before it will stay running. the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th time i bump it over it acts like it flooded. about the 5th time is stays running but barley. i put it in gear and slowly give it gas and it will accelerate, but if i punch it it will kill. once it gets rolling again I have no problems. until i kill it and wait 5 to start. if i kill it then start it immediately, it starts fine no problems. if i wait 20 minutes to start it it starts fine.

Why not try a quick prime ( push key in ) while cranking it when it is warmed up. Also primer bulbs do NOT need to be hard after motor has started , nor will they be.

Try it and see.------If it works then that is good.------If it floods even more, than you may have an internal leak in the electric primer that floods it after shut down.----Not sure what year 100:1 mix started , but I hope you run 50:1 on it.

Pull the tiny hose from the elec. primer/choke to the top of the carb near the intake manifold or it goes on the intake manifold in front of the reeve valves itself. Turn key 1 knot, push key in or whatever equipped on your boat to active the choke. If it spray gas out, it works. Put it back in, start the motor and while running, pull this same hose. If it still dumping gas out = leaky choke. Turn the manual valve to be 90 degree to the body of the primer to see if it shuts off...if it doesn't = crack valve, bad o-ring, etc...
Make sure your idle screw is adjusted correctly.
Good luck.

If you can start the motor, you don't need the electric choke. You can remove the whole thing and tape up the hot wire it the choke is connected to if needed.
