I am completely new to boating and I just inherited a boat and I do not know how to properly start the motor.I am going to take a boating course and take the boat to a mechanic before I take it out but would like to understand how to start it without damageing the motor. It is a 66 40hp johnson outboard with electric start the controls has two levers one is red on the right side the other is black on the left assumeing one is the idle and other is throttle wich is wich.

Could someone please run me through the start-up secquence.

Thank You.

The red is throttle and the black is the shift !!--------------You mix gas and oil at 50:1 --------------------You attach hose to tank and to the motor ( arrow on bulb pointing to motor ) and operate the bulb ( manual fuel pump ) till carburetor is full.----------------Check that choke is in " automatic position " as it has 3 positions.-----------Advance throttle gently till you feel resistance .---------------Operate choke switch and crank over the starter.--------------When motor starts allow it to warm up before roaring away.--------------------Always throttle down to idle before shifting into gear.-----------------Shift with a quick firm motion of the black lever and do not ease it into gear !!--------------------It is always a good idea to have the motor checked at a shop, and you must intall a new impeller if you do not know the history of the motor.
