Starting Fluid.

My fishing buddy has been using starting fluid on these cold days.Thought I saw something
on here about that not being a good thing. Its a 9.9 Merc 4 stroke.I gave it a good lookover
the other day.Other than the shift on the tiller handle and a few other things it looked
the same as my 9.8 Tohatsu. Why the 10th HP difference? We had it out the other day and
almost did'nt get back, motor would not run.He kept feeding it starting fluid and we made it
back to the launch. Its running like mine did when the carb got dirty. He never runs the carb dry.I have a rebuilt carb for my 9.8.Would it work on his motor? If it would I will give it to him and clean and rebuild his to keep as a spare.
Thanks.

The Merc 9.9 4 stroke is in fact a Tohatsu 9.8, so the carbs will interchange. Starting fluid is basically just ether, which can be very volatile, and running on it can lead to cracked rings.
