"Hi,

I am having problems starting my E-tec when it is cold. It usually takes 5-10 minutes of trying to start before it actually goes. Then there is no problem for the rest of the day. Is there a problem with my motor or is it just the way it is? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Darrin"

What is Your starting procedure?
Do You leave the key in 'ign on' for 5 -10 sec before cranking to allow the fuel pressure pump to build pressure?

"I will prime the fuel bulb a

"I will prime the fuel bulb a few times and then I turn the key to ign on a few seconds before attempting to crank. I don't think I have ever left it on for 5-10 sec before starting. But after trying to crank, I wait until all the red lights go off before attempting again. That duration is about 5-10 seconds. Weird thing is, when I try to start the motor at home, I don't have any problem. Granted I usually try in the afternoon. This is just driving me crazy."

"Do You 'prime' the bulb with Your fingertips only, or squeeze it in Your palm?
How is cranking speed and battery condition?"

"I squeeze with my palm. The b

"I squeeze with my palm. The battery is a new interstate cranking battery (1000 cold cranking amps). Dealership said the engine needs 3 revolutions before starting up. Can't tell if it's doing that or not. Engine seems to crank for only a second before stopping and the lights come on. After trying to crank, I checked the bulb again and it is still hard, so I don't think there is a fuel leak."

"If lights comes back again wh

"If lights comes back again when cranking, it means You somewhere has a voltage drop.
Check all battery/cable/main switch/ground connections. Hook up a digital volt meter and monitor at different places from battery to engine when cranking.
It might even be a shorted starter."

"The light doesn't come on

"The light doesn't come on during cranking, just after the engine stops trying to crank. I'm going to take your advice on letting it build pressure before trying to start. If this continues into the warmer months, I'll take it back to the dealer. Thanks for your advice. It is much appreciated to a rookie."

"The restart of the lights ind

"The restart of the lights indicates a voltage drop caused by amp consumption during cranking. The voltage drops, the starter relay does not manage to keep the starter engaged. The starter gets disengaged, no load, the voltage gets up and the system check restarts.
Suggest You hook a voltmeter to starter relay output and in put during cranking and monitor what is happening. Take voltmeter ground from block and not from negative battery cable. Unless engine starts You should be able to crank continuously at least for 30 seconds without any problems."

"Number 1 'tool' for these engines is a decent multi meter. Without knowing relevant readings , I don't 'think' anything, I may only point where to search."
