Starting Battery for 1979 mercruiser 228 305

Any Marine 650 CCA or larger,(Cold cranking amps).

Pick your brand and store. The majority of batteries are made by the same manufacurers and they label/colored as ordered by the sellers

With a boat that size I would have Two.

If you can afford a little more that a standard type I would suggest sealed battery type (AGM) (Absorbent Glass mat) commonly used for motorcycles vs the one with caps you can remove to fill as needed (flooded type).

Here is an example of a dual purpose- Cranking and deep cycle combined. The advantage of the deep cycle aspect is it will recharge after it has been depleted if used until it runs low. Where as a standard may fail to charge if drained down a few times.

If you go with two batteries, one should be "start" duty, the other "dual purpose". I would make sre the bilge pump is wired to the dual purpose. If you don't want to invest in a shore charger, I would suggest you manage the batteries by running out on one of the batteries and returning home on the other one. Whatever you do DO NOT be tempted to use the BOTH position on the 1-2-Both battery switch to recharge both batteries as this will significantly shorten battery life..
