I have twin volvo 5.0FIs in my regal, some time back the port starter began making a terrible grinding noise when starting, changded the starter somewhat better than bad again. Finally changer ring gear put back together and new starter, still grinding noise? do not want to chew up another ring gear.

Ayuh,.... Was it tested when the motor was outa the hull,..?? Why not,..??

It woulda been alota easier then, than now....

It Could be alota things, that all shoulda been checked with the motor outa the hull,...
Flywheel attachment, starter alignment, ring gear on right, etc...
Were the starter bolts changed, when the starter was,..??
If not, try new 1s,... the proper 1s, with the knurling at the shoulders...

The OEM starter motor may have indeed gone bad. The replacement starter motor should have come with it's two nose housing clamping bolts.
Reason: not all starter motor nose housings are the same today. If the clamping bolts were a bit too long, they would have bottomed out prior to completely clamping the new starter motor nose housing to the block.

If this is the case, it may be your problem.

Always double check the bolt length these days.
