"nope, you need a marine start

"nope, you need a marine starter which is spark protected to prevent the ignition of low settling bilge fumes. It's the law and it's for your own safety.
All that said, a new hi-torque mini starter is a sealed design which would be safer, but still not legal and your insurance company will go there if there's ever a claim
4.3 is a 262"

"4.3 made for OMC and other co

"4.3 made for OMC and other companies by General Motors. It shares most core rotating parts with the 4.3 truck engine, but there are many marine specific parts unique to the marine units. Water pump also marine specific. The impeller is brass in a marine w/p. The tin impeller in an automotive water pump will rot away in a mater of hours in salt water, a month or 6 in fresh...
Alternator same deal as starter- spark protected/explosion proof screens on it."

"Bondo,

No problem. This is an open forum and there are lots of references on this board to competitors of ours.

We realize that there are lots of options for buying parts. When I notice a reference to a competitor I try to also post a link to the items here on this site too... when possible.

Thanks."

"Quoting Hy Stat,"a new hi

"Quoting Hy Stat,"a new hi-torque mini starter is a sealed design which would be safer, but still not legal and your insurance company will go there if there's ever a claim "

Are you saying Sierra's #18-5913 is illegal?"

"no, I wasn't identifying

"no, I wasn't identifying any particular part number or vendor, just want to say it's a good idea to have an SAE J1171 marine rated starter for safety and liability reasons. If that Sierra one is J1171 then insurance or Coast Guard should have no issue with it. Automotive hi-torque minis should be as safe as anything in principle, but may lack the marine rating."
